Level 3 - Early Production & Local Industry

Begin production beyond subsistence.

This chapter focuses on advancing survival efforts from basic subsistence to early-stage production and local industry. It covers essential skills and techniques for processing natural resources manually, enabling communities to create tools, materials, and goods necessary for sustainable growth. Topics include manual lumber processing, where axes and saws are used to harvest and prepare wood for construction and fuel. Charcoal production and clay kiln operation are explained to provide fuel and materials for metalworking and pottery.

Mining and ore processing sections introduce methods for extracting and smelting soft ores like iron and copper using charcoal furnaces, laying the foundation for metal tool and hardware production. Simple construction techniques such as brick making, mortar preparation, and wood joinery are detailed to build durable shelters and infrastructure.

Additional sections cover salt harvesting through evaporation or mining, a critical resource for food preservation and health. Brewing methods for beer and basic distillation are presented, offering both nutrition and sanitation benefits. Oil extraction using manual pumps and basic oil processing techniques for producing lamp oil, lubricants, and crude diesel are also included, supporting energy needs and machinery operation.

Finally, soap and alcohol production are discussed to enhance hygiene and disinfection capabilities. Together, these topics equip survivors with the knowledge to transition from mere survival to establishing a functional local industry, improving resilience and quality of life.
